Ali ibn Abi Talib was a cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and a central figure in the religion of Islam. He ruled as the fourth Rashidun Caliph from 656 to 661 and is regarded by Shia Muslims as the first Imam and the rightful immediate successor to Muhammad. Known for his piety, courage, and knowledge, his teachings and sermons are compiled in several influential books, most notably Nahj al-Balagha. His legacy continues to be a source of inspiration and guidance for millions of Muslims worldwide, though his caliphate was also marked by the first major civil war in Islamic history.
