Albert Shanker was an influential American union leader who served as president of the United Federation of Teachers from 1964 to 1985 and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) from 1974 until his death in 1997. He was a leading, and often controversial, voice in the 20th-century debate over education reform in the United States. Shanker championed higher standards for both students and teachers, advocating for policies like teacher certification and national testing. Despite his strong support for public education and teachers' rights, he also became an early proponent of charter schools to foster innovation within the public system.
