Alfred Korzybski

Philosopher

Alfred Korzybski was a Polish-American philosopher and scientist who developed the field of general semantics. He argued that human knowledge of the world is limited by the structure of human language and the structure of the human nervous system. His major work, "Science and Sanity," introduced the idea that people can improve their thinking and behavior by becoming more aware of the linguistic and neurological processes that shape their perceptions. His most famous dictum, "the map is not the territory," emphasizes the critical difference between a representation of reality and reality itself.
