Alfred Stieglitz

Photographer

Alfred Stieglitz was a pivotal American photographer and modern art promoter whose career spanned over five decades. He was instrumental in elevating photography to the status of a fine art, co-founding the Photo-Secessionist movement and publishing the influential journal Camera Work. Through his '291' gallery in New York City, he introduced many avant-garde European artists to the United States, including Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. His own photographic work, including his famous cloud studies known as 'Equivalents' and his portraits of Georgia O'Keeffe, established him as one of the most important figures in the history of the medium.
