Alger Hiss

Government Official

Alger Hiss was an American government official who was involved in the establishment of the United Nations. He was accused in 1948 of having been a spy for the Soviet Union, a charge he vehemently denied. Although the statute of limitations for espionage had expired, Hiss was convicted of two counts of perjury in 1950 and served more than three years in prison. He maintained his innocence for the rest of his life, and the case remains a defining and controversial episode of the early Cold War.
