Alma Gluck

Singer

Alma Gluck was a Romanian-born American soprano, one of the world's most famous female singers at the height of her career. After emigrating to the United States as a child, she debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1909 and quickly rose to prominence. Gluck became one of the earliest recording superstars, and her 1915 recording of 'Carry Me Back to Old Virginny' was the first by a classical artist to sell over one million copies. She largely retired from the concert stage in 1925 to devote herself to her family but remained an influential figure in the music world.
