Antoine Lavoisier

Scientist

Antoine Lavoisier was a prominent French chemist and nobleman central to the 18th-century chemical revolution. He is widely considered the "father of modern chemistry" for his influence in both theoretical and experimental chemistry. Lavoisier is most noted for his discovery of the role oxygen plays in combustion, for recognizing and naming oxygen and hydrogen, and for helping construct the metric system. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was guillotined during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror.
