Athenagoras I

Religious Leader

Athenagoras I, born Aristokles Spyrou, served as the 268th Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 1948 until his death in 1972. He is renowned for his significant contributions to Christian ecumenism and interfaith dialogue. In a historic moment, he met with Pope Paul VI in Jerusalem in 1964, the first such meeting between the heads of the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches in over five centuries. This encounter led to the joint Catholic–Orthodox Declaration of 1965, which mutually lifted the excommunications of the Great Schism of 1054.
