Ben Linder

Engineer

Benjamin 'Ben' Linder was an American engineer who dedicated his skills to humanitarian projects in developing nations. In the 1980s, he moved to Nicaragua to help the Sandinista government by designing and building a small hydroelectric dam to bring electricity to a rural community. On April 28, 1987, Linder was ambushed and killed by the Contras, a U.S.-backed rebel group, while he was traveling to survey a new dam site. His death brought international attention to the Reagan administration's covert war in Nicaragua and turned him into a symbol for peace activists.
