William J. "Bill" Janklow was a prominent American attorney and Republican politician who left a significant mark on South Dakota's political landscape. He served four terms as the Governor of South Dakota, making him the state's longest-serving governor, and also represented the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. Known for his aggressive, often controversial style, Janklow was a dominant force in state politics, championing economic development and fiscal conservatism. His political career ended after he was convicted of second-degree manslaughter for his role in a fatal traffic collision in 2003.
