Claudio Hummes

Catholic Cardinal

Cláudio Hummes was a prominent Brazilian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Order of Friars Minor. He served as the Archbishop of São Paulo from 1998 to 2006, one of the largest archdioceses in the world. Elevated to the cardinalate in 2001 by Pope John Paul II, he later became the Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy at the Vatican. Hummes is famously remembered for encouraging the newly elected Pope Francis in 2013 not to forget the poor, which inspired the pontiff's choice of name.
