David H. Souter

David Hackett Souter served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1990 until his retirement in 2009. Nominated by President George H. W. Bush, he was expected to be a conservative but consistently sided with the court's liberal bloc. Before his Supreme Court appointment, he served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the New Hampshire Supreme Court. Since retiring from the Supreme Court, he has continued to hear cases by designation on the First Circuit.
