Denis Kearney

Political Activist

Denis Kearney was an Irish-born American political leader in late 19th-century California, famous for his nativist and anti-Chinese agitation. He founded and led the Workingmen's Party of California, which became a significant force in state politics by capitalizing on the economic anxieties of the white labor force. Kearney was a powerful orator, known for his fiery speeches that blamed Chinese immigrants for low wages and unemployment. His relentless campaign and popular slogan, "The Chinese must go!", were instrumental in creating the political pressure that led to the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
