Dziga Vertov was a pioneering Soviet documentary film and newsreel director, as well as an influential cinema theorist. Born David Abelevich Kaufman, he adopted the name Dziga Vertov, which loosely translates to 'spinning top'. He was a key figure in the 'Kino-Eye' (Cine-Eye) movement, which aimed to capture 'life as it is' and 'life caught unawares' without staged scenes. His most famous work, 'Man with a Movie Camera,' is celebrated for its revolutionary editing techniques and is considered a landmark of documentary filmmaking.
