Earl Derr Biggers was an American novelist and playwright best known for creating the famous fictional Chinese-American detective, Charlie Chan. Born in Warren, Ohio, and a graduate of Harvard University, he initially worked as a journalist before turning to fiction. His Chan novels, starting with "The House Without a Key" in 1925, became immensely popular and were adapted into numerous films. Biggers's work left a lasting legacy on the detective genre, though his characters have also been the subject of modern critical re-evaluation regarding ethnic stereotypes.
