Edward Emerson Barnard

Scientist

Edward Emerson Barnard was a highly skilled American observational astronomer, largely self-taught, who made numerous significant discoveries. He is most famous for discovering Barnard's Star in 1916, which has the largest known proper motion of any star relative to the Sun. His pioneering work in astrophotography revealed many details of the Milky Way, nebulae, and comets that were previously unseen. Despite humble beginnings, his dedication and keen eye made him one of the leading astronomers of his time.
