Edward Irving

Clergyman

Edward Irving was a prominent Scottish clergyman, best known for his charismatic preaching and as a key figure in the founding of the Catholic Apostolic Church. Born in Annan, Scotland, he initially served as an assistant to Thomas Chalmers in Glasgow before moving to London, where his sermons attracted vast and influential congregations. His theological views, particularly on the human nature of Christ and eschatology, became controversial, leading to his excommunication from the Church of Scotland. Despite the controversy, his teachings laid the groundwork for a new church movement, and he remains an important, albeit complex, figure in 19th-century religious history.
