Epictetus

Philosopher

Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher born into slavery in Hierapolis, Phrygia, who later gained his freedom and taught philosophy in Rome. After being banished from the city along with all other philosophers, he established a renowned school in Nicopolis in northwestern Greece. His teachings, which were never written by him, were transcribed and published by his dedicated pupil Arrian in the works known as the Discourses and the Enchiridion. Central to his philosophy is the principle of distinguishing between what is within our control and what is not, advocating for virtue and inner peace through acceptance.
