Frank Press was a distinguished American geophysicist and a leading figure in science and public policy. He served as the science advisor to U.S. President Jimmy Carter and as director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy from 1977 to 1980. For twelve years, Press was the president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, where he guided the nation's scientific agenda. His research significantly advanced the understanding of earthquakes, the Earth's interior, and the use of seismology for nuclear test monitoring.
