George David Aiken was an American politician and member of the Republican Party who served as the 64th Governor of Vermont from 1937 to 1941. He then represented Vermont in the United States Senate for 34 years, from 1941 to 1975, becoming a respected voice on foreign policy and agriculture. Known for his moderate and independent views, Aiken was a leader of the progressive wing of the Republican party. He is famously remembered for his 1966 proposal to resolve the Vietnam War by having the United States 'declare victory and go home.'
