George Elmer Pataki is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 53rd Governor of New York from 1995 to 2006. A member of the Republican Party, he began his political career as the mayor of his hometown of Peekskill, later being elected to the State Assembly and the State Senate. During his time as governor, he was known for enacting tax cuts, tough-on-crime policies, and leading the state through the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. After leaving office, he has remained involved in politics, including a brief run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.
