George Nethercutt

Politician

George Rector Nethercutt Jr. was an American lawyer and politician who served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Representing Washington's 5th congressional district from 1995 to 2005, he gained national prominence for his stunning victory over Tom Foley, the sitting Speaker of the House, in the 1994 election. A Republican, Nethercutt upheld his pledge to serve only six terms in the House, choosing not to seek re-election in 2004. After leaving Congress, he founded a non-partisan foundation to promote civic education and later worked as a lobbyist and political commentator.
