Gérard Debreu

Economist

Gérard Debreu was a French-born economist and mathematician who later became a naturalized citizen of the United States. He is best known for his groundbreaking work in general equilibrium theory, which rigorously established the conditions for market equilibrium. In 1983, he was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for having incorporated new analytical methods into economic theory and for his rigorous reformulation of the theory of general equilibrium. His seminal 1959 book, 'Theory of Value: An Axiomatic Analysis of Economic Equilibrium,' remains a foundational text in mathematical economics.
