Gifford Pinchot

Conservationist

Gifford Pinchot was a pioneering American forester and politician who served as the first Chief of the United States Forest Service from 1905 to 1910. Appointed by his close friend President Theodore Roosevelt, Pinchot championed the conservation of the nation's forests through planned use and renewal. His conservationist philosophy centered on the idea of using natural resources wisely for the greatest good, for the greatest number, for the longest time. He later served two non-consecutive terms as the Governor of Pennsylvania, continuing his legacy of public service and progressive reform.
