Gwendolyn Brooks was an influential American poet, author, and teacher. Her work often focused on the personal celebrations and struggles of ordinary people in her community. In 1950, she became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for her book of poetry, 'Annie Allen'. Brooks served as Poet Laureate of Illinois from 1968 until her death and was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1985.
