Harold Edward Holt

Politician

Harold Edward Holt was an Australian politician who served as the 17th Prime Minister of Australia from 1966 until his presumed death in 1967. His brief tenure was marked by a significant expansion of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War and the dismantling of the White Australia policy. He also oversaw the landmark 1967 referendum which allowed the Commonwealth to make laws for Indigenous Australians and include them in the census. Holt's time in office ended abruptly when he disappeared while swimming in the ocean off Cheviot Beach, Victoria, with his body never being recovered.
