As Reichsführer of the Schutzstaffel (SS), he was a principal architect of the Holocaust, overseeing the vast network of concentration and extermination camps. He controlled the SS and the Gestapo, using them as instruments of terror to enforce Nazi ideology and suppress all opposition. After Germany's defeat, Himmler was captured by Allied forces and committed suicide while in custody to avoid facing trial for his war crimes.
