Irving Fisher

Economist

Irving Fisher was a prominent American economist, statistician, inventor, and Progressive social campaigner. He was one of the earliest American neoclassical economists, making significant contributions to utility theory, general equilibrium, and the quantity theory of money. Fisher is particularly remembered for his work on the relationship between interest rates and inflation, as well as his theory of debt deflation to explain the Great Depression. Despite his reputation being tarnished by his optimistic public statements before the 1929 stock market crash, his theoretical work has had a lasting influence on modern economic thought.
