Jacques-Louis David

Painter

Jacques-Louis David was a highly influential French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of his era. His work marked a significant shift away from the frivolity of the Rococo period, drawing inspiration from classical art and virtue. An active supporter of the French Revolution, he became a virtual dictator of the arts under the French Republic. Later, after the fall of Robespierre, he aligned himself with Napoleon Bonaparte, becoming one of the most celebrated artists of the First French Empire.
