Ray was a career criminal who had previously been convicted of numerous offenses, including burglary, mail fraud, and armed robbery. After the assassination, he fled the country, sparking an international manhunt that ended with his capture in London two months later. He initially confessed to the murder but recanted his confession three days later, spending the rest of his life attempting to withdraw his guilty plea and claim he was part of a larger conspiracy.
