Jean-Philippe Rameau

Composer

Jean-Philippe Rameau was one of the most important French composers and music theorists of the Baroque era. He replaced Jean-Baptiste Lully as the dominant composer of French opera and was also a leading composer for the harpsichord. His theoretical writings, especially the 'Traité de l'harmonie' (Treatise on Harmony), founded the modern study of musical harmony. His work fell into obscurity after his death but was revived in the 20th century and is now widely appreciated for its richness and originality.
