Joel Barlow

Poet

Joel Barlow was an influential American poet, diplomat, and politician during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A member of the literary group known as the 'Hartford Wits,' he is best known for his ambitious epic poem, 'The Vision of Columbus,' which he later expanded into 'The Columbiad.' His most beloved work, however, remains the mock-heroic poem 'The Hasty-Pudding,' a nostalgic tribute to a simple American dish. Beyond his literary pursuits, Barlow served as an American diplomat and ultimately died of exposure in Poland during Napoleon's retreat from Moscow.
