John Bauer was a renowned Swedish painter and illustrator celebrated for his distinctive style. He is best known for his enchanting illustrations for 'Bland tomtar och troll' (Among Gnomes and Trolls), an annual Swedish folklore and fairy tales anthology. His work often depicted the dense, mystical forests of Sweden, populated by trolls, princesses, and other folkloric creatures, blending romantic nationalism with Art Nouveau influences. Tragically, his life and promising career were cut short when he drowned in a shipwreck on Lake Vättern in 1918.
