John Hunt Morgan

Military Leader

John Hunt Morgan was a Confederate general in the American Civil War, renowned for his daring cavalry raids into Union-held territory. Known as the "Thunderbolt of the Confederacy," his leadership of Morgan's Raiders struck fear and disrupted enemy supply lines. His most famous exploit, the Great Raid of 1863, was one of the longest cavalry operations of the war, though it ended in his capture. After a daring prison escape, Morgan returned to service but was killed in action in Greeneville, Tennessee, in 1864.
