John Paul Stevens was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1975 until his retirement in 2010. Appointed by Republican President Gerald Ford, he was initially considered a moderate conservative but gradually transitioned to become a consistent member of the court's liberal wing. His jurisprudence was known for its independent, pragmatic, and highly detailed statutory analysis. At the time of his retirement, Stevens was the third-longest-serving justice in the history of the Supreme Court.
