John Marlan Poindexter is a retired United States naval officer who served as a key Department of Defense official. He was appointed as Deputy National Security Advisor in 1983 and later served as National Security Advisor for President Ronald Reagan from 1985 to 1986. Poindexter was a central figure in the Iran-Contra affair, a political scandal that involved the covert sale of arms to Iran to fund the Contras in Nicaragua. Although initially convicted on felony charges related to the scandal, his convictions were ultimately reversed on appeal.
