John Wilkes Booth was a famous American stage actor who assassinated United States President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865. A member of the prominent Booth theatrical family, he was a Confederate sympathizer who was vehemently opposed to Lincoln and the abolition of slavery. His original plot was to kidnap the president, but it evolved into an assassination plan intended to throw the Union government into chaos. After fatally shooting Lincoln, Booth fled and was hunted down by Union soldiers, who cornered and killed him twelve days later.
