Jon Postel

Computer Scientist

Jon Postel was a pioneering American computer scientist who played a central role in the creation and administration of the early Internet. He served as the editor of the Request for Comment (RFC) document series and managed the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) until his death. Postel was known for his influential, albeit informal, guidance in protocol design, famously encapsulated in what is known as Postel's Law: 'Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others'. His foundational work on domain names, IP addresses, and protocol numbers established the stable, scalable structure that the modern internet is built upon.
