Josephus Daniels

Politician

Josephus Daniels was an influential American newspaper editor and progressive politician from North Carolina. He rose to national prominence as the Secretary of the Navy under President Woodrow Wilson, serving throughout World War I. After his naval service, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him United States Ambassador to Mexico, a role he held from 1933 to 1941. While a supporter of many progressive reforms, his legacy is also complicated by his role as a leading proponent of white supremacy, particularly in the Wilmington insurrection of 1898.
