Julius Wellhausen

Biblical Scholar

Julius Wellhausen was a highly influential German biblical scholar and orientalist, best known for his contributions to the study of the Hebrew Bible. His most famous work, Prolegomena to the History of Ancient Israel, systematically formulated the documentary hypothesis, radically changing the modern academic understanding of the Pentateuch's origins. This hypothesis proposed that the first five books of the Bible were compiled from four distinct, independent narrative sources known as J, E, D, and P. Though his theories have been debated and modified, Wellhausen's work remains a foundational cornerstone of critical biblical scholarship and historiography.
