Junípero Serra

Missionary

Junípero Serra was a Spanish Catholic priest and missionary of the Franciscan Order who founded a series of missions in Alta California. Born Miquel Josep Serra i Ferrer in Majorca, Spain, he took the name "Junípero" in honor of Saint Juniper, a companion of Saint Francis. He was a key figure in the Spanish colonization of California, personally establishing nine of the twenty-one missions from San Diego to San Francisco. Serra was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis in 2015, a decision that remains a subject of public debate regarding his impact on Native American populations.
