Lou Harrison was an American composer, music critic, and teacher, known for his pioneering work in blending Western and non-Western musical traditions. A student of Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, he was a key figure in the American experimental music scene, particularly on the West Coast. Harrison was also a strong advocate for just intonation, microtonality, and the use of percussion instruments, often constructing his own instruments. His prolific output includes symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and works for gamelan, reflecting his deep interest in world music and pacifist ideals.
