Louis Althusser

“There is no such thing as an innocent reading, we must say what reading we are guilty of.”

“Ideology represents the imaginary relationship of individuals to their real conditions of existence.”

“All ideology hails or interpellates concrete individuals as concrete subjects.”

“There is no practice except by and in an ideology.”

“The lonely hour of the 'last instance' never comes.”

“Philosophy is, in the last instance, class struggle in the field of theory.”

“It is not their real conditions of existence, their real world, that ‘men’ ‘represent to themselves’ in ideology, but above all their relation to those conditions of existence.”

“Ideology has no history.”

“History is a process without a subject.”
