Mary Beth Whitehead

Activist

Mary Beth Whitehead-Gould is an American public figure who became famous as the surrogate mother in the landmark 'Baby M' legal case of 1986–1988. She entered into a surrogacy agreement with William and Elizabeth Stern but, after giving birth, decided she wanted to keep the child. The New Jersey Supreme Court ultimately voided the surrogacy contract, recognized Whitehead as the child's legal mother, and awarded custody to the Sterns with visitation rights for Whitehead. Following the highly publicized trial, she became a prominent advocate and speaker against commercial surrogacy arrangements.
