Maurice Wilkins

Physicist

Maurice Hugh Frederick Wilkins was a British physicist and molecular biologist whose research was crucial to understanding the structure of DNA. At King's College London, his work using X-ray diffraction produced a critical image of the DNA molecule known as 'Photo 51'. This photograph, taken by his colleague Rosalind Franklin, was essential evidence that enabled James Watson and Francis Crick to develop their double helix model. For his foundational contributions, Wilkins was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962 with Watson and Crick.
