Mohammed Omar

Political Leader

Mullah Mohammed Omar was the reclusive founder and first supreme leader of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, commonly known as the Taliban. He led the Taliban to victory in the Afghan civil war, ruling the country from 1996 to 2001 with a strict interpretation of Sharia law. Following the US-led invasion in 2001, he went into hiding after refusing to hand over Osama bin Laden. Omar remained the spiritual leader of the Taliban insurgency until his death from tuberculosis in 2013, which was concealed for two years.
