Norman MacCaig

Poet

Norman MacCaig was a highly regarded Scottish poet, known for his lyrical, precise, and often witty observations of nature and human experience. Born in Edinburgh, he spent much of his life there as a primary school teacher, while his summers were famously spent in Assynt, Sutherland, which became a central subject of his work. His poetry evolved over his long career, moving from a dense, metaphysical style to a more direct and accessible voice that earned him widespread popularity. Awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1986, MacCaig remains one of Scotland's most beloved and influential modern poets.
