Paul Laurence Dunbar

Poet

Paul Laurence Dunbar was one of the first influential Black poets in American literature, gaining national recognition for his work. Born in Dayton, Ohio, to parents who were enslaved before the American Civil War, he began writing stories and verse as a child. His work often featured a conversational tone, with two distinct styles: the formal standard English of the classical poet and the dialect of the antebellum South. Although he died young at the age of 33, Dunbar's prolific body of work includes novels, essays, short stories, and poetry that left a lasting legacy.
