Peter Paul Rubens

Painter

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a prolific Flemish Baroque painter, and a proponent of an exuberant style that emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality. He is well known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. In addition to running a large workshop in Antwerp, Rubens was also a classically educated humanist scholar and diplomat who was knighted by two European sovereigns. His unique and immensely popular style influenced painting for generations, making him one of the most influential artists of his era.
