Richard Henry Lee was a prominent American statesman and Founding Father from Virginia. He is best known for making the motion in the Second Continental Congress calling for the colonies' independence from Great Britain. Lee served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, signed the Articles of Confederation, and was President of the Congress under the Articles. A leading Antifederalist, he later served as a U.S. Senator for Virginia after the ratification of the Constitution.
